Plastic profiles made of 3D printing

Plastic profiles made of 3D printing enable the individual design of cam timing belts with a high degree of flexibility. The thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) profiles are printed directly on the timing belts and can be freely adapted to the respective application in terms of shape, size and arrangement. This allows even complex geometries for transport, positioning and feeding tasks to be implemented precisely.

This type of cam timing belt is particularly suitable for prototypes, small series and customer-specific applications. The implementation is based on CAD data, ideally as a STEP file and dimensioned drawing. Even without CAD data, it is possible to implement it according to a sketch, whereby the data is created in advance against calculation.

Compared to injection-molded cams or metal profiles made of 3D printing, the process offers a high degree of design freedom for small quantities and individual geometries.

At ROTH, we use a patented technology for the direct 3D printing of plastic profiles on timing belts (EP 3 346 160 B1 / US 10,457,003 B2 / CA 2,990,934).

More informations

3D-printed plastic profiles are custom-made carriers or cams made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that are additively manufactured directly onto the timing belt. They are particularly suitable for flexible transport and positioning tasks with customer-specific geometries.

The 3D printed cams are particularly suitable for prototypes, small quantities, and short development time, or often changing profile geometries. Individual customization can be made quick and economical.

3D-printed profiles allow for a high degree of design freedom without additional tooling costs. This makes it possible to efficiently implement complex geometries, special shapes, or short-notice changes.

Yes, 3D-printed plastic profiles can be designed almost without restriction. Even complex drive teeth geometries or customer-specific special shapes are possible.

Typical applications include conveyor technology, automation, packaging machines, feeding systems, and prototype and special-purpose machine construction with individual transport requirements.

A CAD file in STEP format is preferably required for production. Information about the timing belt, the profile arrangement, and a dimensioned drawing are also helpful for technical review.

Yes, the profiles are additively manufactured directly onto the back of the timing belt. This creates a permanent connection and a flexible solution for individual transport needs.

3D printing is primarily economical for prototypes and smaller production runs. For larger production runs, injection-molded and welded profiles may be the more economical solution.
